Son of a schoolmaster. Publication of Eighteen Poems in 1934 established his reputation. His works include The Map of Love, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog and Deaths and Entrances. Best known for Under Milkwood. Died from chronic alcohol abuse while on lecture tour of USA.
